Why Does Sargassum Happen?

Sargassum is a type of brown macroalgae that floats in island-like masses in the ocean. While it provides a crucial habitat for marine life out in the open water (like sea turtles and fish), ocean currents and winds push massive blooms into the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico during the warmer months. When it washes ashore and begins to decay in the hot sun, it releases hydrogen sulfide gas—which is exactly what gives it that signature “rotten egg” smell.

But don’t let it ruin your trip! Key West has plenty of amazing resort pools, boat excursions to clear sandbars, and world-class bars to enjoy while the beaches are being cleared.
